Appalachian trail.

DSC_0834.JPG

One of the things that I focus on when I think about Edda's disability is that we can't really go hiking as a family. I love to hike - we took a hiking honeymoon in the Rockies where we had our first argument as a married couple on Mt. Bierstadt. I love hiking because it puts me in the middle of nature and it's cheap and there is nothing else really to do except talk or walk. It makes me really sad that we probably will never hike the Rocky Mountains as a family.

But this is not a story of sadness, it is the story of triumph! This weekend, with the beautiful weather and Vince off at Six Flags with a pal, we took Edda to part of the Maryland Appalachian Trail and probably hiked 3/4 of a mile with her. We have a large jogging stroller and we managed to go up rocky paths, ford a river and listen to Edda laugh her head off the whole time.

It was not a very challenging hike, we did see some folks who were enjoying a cold beer while hiking on the trail, but it made me very, very happy. It was not a very crowded, but we did see 3 or 4 other sets of hikers who all looked at us with a bit of curiosity and I think the beer drinking group even enthusiastically cheered us on by saying - GO YOU! Go us indeed...

Playing games.

DSC_0736.JPG

I have this strong desire to go backwards towards non-electronic devices. Photos on paper, scraps of paper notes, mementos that need to be glued into a scrapbook.  Books on paper! I've been trying to get board games back into regular rotation (instead of little games on iPhone screens). We've moved out coffee table back out to the middle of the living room, we had it shoved against a wall for years because we were afraid that Edda couldn't navigate around it, but she seems to do OK with it in the middle of the room. It's been out for a while and she hasn't fallen over it yet.  That coffee table helps me pull out some games at a moments notice.

Running around day.

Both the kids were home sick today - slight fever, a little grumpy. I wouldn't have taken either of them in to see the pediatrician, however, Vince already had a standing appointment for his annual check-up this morning. So he actually did see the doctor today. He got a tetanus shot today. I wasn't there to see it, but apparently he did not cry in anticipation, nor did he cry during the shot. Brave boy.

Friday night movie night. We saw Diary of a Wimpy Kid - part 3? It got 4.5 stars on iTunes - crazy. Edda loved it the most!

Pie.

upload

So I took another test in Anatomy today. It was fine. I'm getting a little discouraged because the first round admissions to nursing school have been sent out, and yet, my application still remains "pending". I'm a little confused - as I don't really know how my application could have been better. Oh well. I'm pretty sure I'll know in the next week or so, but I've been thinking about what I can do if this nursing thing falls through. I thought I needed to open a pie business. Jeremy looked at me like I was crazy - he said that I have no food experience. I told him that I was very good at eating pie. That should count for something at least.

Sloppy Joe's for dinner -

Our new au pair, Nat is here - and she is a lot of fun. She also loves ice cream, I think we might have made a resolution tonight to try all the Ben and Jerry's flavors during her time here. Tonight we tried Imagine Whirled Peace and New York Super Fudge Chunk. I was very good and didn't have any. I've been trying not to have any sweets during the work week with minimal success. Jeremy is interested in trying out this fasting diet that was recommended to him by his mother - fast for 2 days and eat whatever you want for the other five days. Now the question is, which 2 days to fast? Tricky question. It's so nice outside these days, I'm really loving the days of beautiful weather.

Hot today!

upload

Hard to believe that two weeks ago, it snowed 2 inches. It got to 80 degrees today and I think it might get to 90 tomorrow. I usually enjoy a month or so without climate control and just having the windows open, but it might not happen this year. I just might have to turn the AC on tomorrow.

Here's Edda at OT today.  She is sleeping because she had OT, PT in school as well as recess and PE outside.

Cherry Blossom 10 Miler.

cherry blossom

I ran ten miles yesterday! At the Cherry Blossom 10 miler - downtown. It was a little early for the blooms, but it was a beautiful day and perfect for running. For those who care, Christine and I ran negative splits :)!!!

Back in the groove - almost.

This is the week after spring break, it's actually a short week for everyone. Last week, Jeremy and Vince went to Kiki's house in New Mexico to help put mud on the walls. It's been planned for so long, this house, this week of mudding. Jeremy's brother Ben and nephew Felix traveled all the way from Sweden to participate. Three generations all together putting mud with their own hands onto the walls of this house. From reports from Jeremy, they worked long days and ate well and the kids had a great time. Vince was not allowed to bring electronics of any sort (which if you know him, really cripples his sources of entertainment, but it almost didn't matter anyway - there's no cell coverage or wi-fi where they were going to be) and I was a little worried about him getting bored or fighting with Felix. Luckily, none of these worries came to pass, Vince and Felix got along great and they basically played in the mud for nine hours each day. I guess making mud pies, getting mud on each other, etc. I got to see photos of the house, of the kids playing together.
