Happy new year!

Vince woke up today with a fever - actually, he's had a low fever for a few days and now it's really kicked into high gear. Poor thing, I just hope that he gets better soon and not get the rest of us sick.

I am ready to get back to regular eating. Feasting for a week is delicious and no good at the same time.

1.21 Jigawatts!

I need to go upstairs and take a shower - I'm smelly. I also need to give Edda a shower and Boba (our extra dog) a shower too. It's going to be an inter-generational, inter-species, coed shower. At least we can all use the same Dora branded Suave shampoo.

Last night, we introduced the kids to Back to the Future. Such a good movie. We only saw the first one, I'm interested to see the 2nd one which is set in 2015 which is pretty much now - lots of flying cars apparently.

Ruby's getting old.

So its been about 6-8 months since I've really noticed Ruby slowing down - she doesn't like to walk on hot days, and even on cold days she's a little wheezy. Two nights ago, she couldn't jump on to Vince's bed. Yesterday, when Maxi and Boba were barking like crazy at the doorbell, Ruby barked a few times from the comfort of her doggie bed - not wanting to get up from the poof-y comfort. Last night, she did not even seem to want to come upstairs - but did so at the very last minute before lights out. Ruby is going to be 12 in January. Still eating and wagging her tail like a champ! She is a good dog :)

Post Christmas -

Even though I don't love Christmas - I do love the days between Christmas and New Years - a time to catch up and clean up. A time to make New Year's resolutions. I'm working today - I think very few people are going to be at the office. We are getting a little bit of snow now - snow before and after Christmas. Not too shabby.

I made triumphantly decorated sugar cookies.

And I went to a candlelight service.

Holiday photoshoot -

I have always wanted to have a holiday party for my Rett Syndrome family, but it always seemed like it would be a little sad - having all these non-verbal girls sitting on Santa's lap just asking for the wish that they could walk and talk and be seizure-free, so I never put it together. This year, just serendipitously, our friends, Lauren and Kevin, parents of Molly, organized a photoshoot with CureRett, a UK organization to take photos of our girls and raise awareness and funds to find treatments for Rett Syndrome.

So on the 22nd we cleared out our living room and turned it into a photo studio:

And people brought food:

And we partied like it was 1999. I can't wait to show you the photos, Kevin did such a great job!

Vince held babies and introduced him to the wonders of Coca Cola (the baby did not have any Coke, I made sure of that):

Happy Birthday to Me

Well, today (X'mas Day) is my birthday.  I was woke up by a "Wishing me a Happy Birthday" phone call from Mom at 4:30 AM.  It was a bit early but, nevertheless, exciting.  After breakfast, I was at my office 5:30 AM to make up times for my absence after Dec. 26th.

After 9:30 AM, I am going back to my apartment to take a shower and heading to the city for Donald's Party.  Mom asked me to get him a cheese cake, his favorite,  from "Cheese Cake Factory".  I did just that on Friday evening hours to a completely packed parking lot at Oak-ridge shopping mall, San Jose, CA under heavy rain shower.  Pretty hard to drive and being fairly miserable.

Well, need to go back to work and wish everyone has a safe and happy Holidays.

Anatomy and Physiolgy - continues to kick my butt.

Can I just say how grueling this class is? My final is tomorrow - not cumulative. Thank goodness! For example: here is a post it note of some of the anatomy that I have to memorize:

upload

Not too bad huh? Until you realize that it is one of one thousand post-it notes.

upload

And that is the easy half, there is the physiology, which is what all this stuff does. How the cerebral spinal fluid moves around, the functions of all 12 cranial nerves, how we hear/smell/taste and see. This is the class that is kind of making me doubt my ability to multi-task - I mean I'm really good at not wasting time, but this is kind of ridiculous.

This is lecturing in the modern era - a prof talking about the ventricles in the brain and 17 people with their phones out taking video of the lecture.

Christmas concert

Vince had his annual Christmas concert at school last night. Oh no, not Christmas concert, Winter Concert. Last year, there were no holiday songs! None! Not even non-denominational ones like winter wonderland or frosty the snowman :(. This year, we had the Chipmunk Christmas song, with a solo by none other than our own Vince. Here's a video Jeremy shot on his phone from way back. Vince is a little blown out, he's in the front, just to the left of the music conductor, with a tie on. He gets the hula hoop line :)

Here's the interview after the performance. Notice chest fist bump at the end of the video.

Mulch

upload

My mother is in town for a few months and usually she hosts a Friday night dinner for us, which is wonderful because after a long week at work and school, we all love to have a dinner already made for us. This past Friday, she wasn't feeling very well, so dinner was cancelled and I didn't get to see her. So Sunday (after a reminder from Jeremy), I called her up and went over to her house to hang out. Her house is so much quieter than my house without the kids/dogs/17 million Colbert/Dora/Minecraft/Christmas music going on.

We worked on getting this mulch pile a little smaller. She's so pleased - all this mulch she got for free from a tree service she saw just on the road near her house.

Basketball.

Did I mention I'm assistant coaching Vince's basketball team? Did I mention that I have no idea what a short forward does? Or a guard? Or a center? I have all these basketball enthusiasts around me telling me that we have to "pick and roll" or "teach the fundamentals" and I'm at a loss. So I went to the local high school (with my running pal and head coach Christine)and watched an early evening basketball (JV) game and talked to some of the dads of the players. They also mentioned the "pick" and the "fundamentals". As in "OMG!  Did you see that?  That was the perfect pick!"  I thought to myself "?. You are not really helping me people."  Anyways I'm very lucky to have a head coach who loves coaching and also doesn't really know basketball. We are having a good time.

upload

Also, last night we were confused. When people tell you that Hanukkah ends on Sunday, it means that it really ends Saturday night. So only 7 candles were lit on the 8th night.

Office Christmas party.

upload

Jeremy's office holiday party was held downtown at the Hamilton, this year we decided to leave Edda home with SyHyun and just take Vince to the par-tay. I think this is the first Xmas party that Edda's missed - she just likes going to bed at 8 pm. We don't often go out just the 3 of us, sans-Edda, so I just marvel at the ease of travel (making a quick detour to CVS, running for a train pulling into the station, never looking for the elevator, stopping to admired holiday displays at Macy's) and then feeling guilty about the whole thing. Jeremy always, always wants me to go to the Xmas party - "it'll be fun!". I kind of have fun, I know a lot of people by face now, I've seen them a bunch of times, but they like  gossiping about work and I don't know what they are talking about or else I need to make small talk, which is OK, but exhausting. But I had a nice dinner and a glass of sangria.

Vince had a nice time, I told him he could have as many Cokes as he wanted, he just needed to ask the bartender himself and not bother me about getting him a Coke. I think the grand total for the evening was 4, maybe 5? I also required him to pee before we left the restaurant.

upload

Every office event, we end up hoping that a particular 4 and 2 year old end up showing up because otherwise Vince will be bored out of his mind - this year, they were there, so in the midst of cocktails and adult conversation, there was wrestling and wrangling.

Nursing school here I come, maybe?

The time has come to decide if I'm going to apply to nursing school. I've taken one prereq course a term since the fall of 2010 and I thought that I would not even need to think about going to nursing school until Spring of 2014 (which in 2010 seemed like an eternity away). But just a few weeks ago, I discovered that my prereqs will be done by Fall of 2013 so I need to apply now! Which brings me to an existential question of whether I can actually pull this nursing/working/house/kids/dogs and husband thing. I'm not sure that I can, I have been breezing through my prereqs, none of them have required a lot of studying, so except for class time, I've been doing very little of prep work. This semester, with my first Anatomy class, I've been swamped. The memorization work has been very time consuming and I'm doubting my ability to take 2 classes a term (which will be necessary for going to school part time) and managing the rest of my responsibilities. I also mentioned to Jeremy that I wanted to start taking guitar lessons to which Jeremy replied, "You are not allowed to have any more hobbies, I'm the one who gets the next hobby!" Apparently I'm too busy? Or too busy for him?

upload

So yesterday, I started knocking down my non-class requirements for applying to school, the first of which was to take a 4-hour test of academic skills.

When Edda was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome, my weight plummeted 15 pounds - I looked great! and I felt awful. Over the years, the weight has come back as I've become happier and now I'm 20-25 pounds up from the low which is a little too much, so I've been wanting to bring my weight down 8-10 pounds - so I've been watching my intake pretty carefully for the past month or so. The thing about dieting is that one is always on the edge of hunger and that being on the edge of hunger makes you grouchy. It also makes one vulnerable to extra caloric expenditure. So I'm in the middle of the math section of the test and I can actually feel my brain drawing more caloric reserves so that I can simplify fractions or do unit conversions more quickly and accurately, but I'm also about to pass out and I can see the errors creep in as I get to the end of the section.

All discipline has broken down.

upload

No matter what happens during the day - most nights we all have dinner together. Sometimes it is something elaborate, but most of the time it's pretty simple. Last night we had spinach and gnocchi (straight from a package of pasta and a jar of sauce).

When my mother-in-law came over this past weekend, it was clear that all discipline regarding the dogs and food had broken down. Maxi was especially egregious - her nose was under your elbow, muzzle practically in your bowl of soup ready for a taste. It's always a little embarrassing to have your dog eating a guest's dinner while they themselves are still eating it. So we reinstated some rules. I put down some painters tape of the floor to mark off the dining room and then I'm making the dogs stay on their mats behind the line during all of dinner.

upload

I'm still assistant coaching Vince's basketball team this season. It's hard to coach Vince, he's not so good at basketball, so he commits some technical fouls and we called him on one for traveling and he got so upset with me. He's still mad at me during dinner:

Nutcracker!

My running partner's daughter was performing in her ballet school's Nutcracker on Friday night. I have not seen the Nut in many years, so I was looking forward to this production. I made Vince go and he did complain until I mentioned three of his male friends would be there that night as well.  Then things got a little perky.  My friend's daughter is in middle school and even though she hasn't been dancing at this high of a level for very long, she had a few solos and looked absolutely beautiful and graceful. I was so proud of her and happy for her hard work and we deluged her with flowers and only momentarily had the fleeting sinking feeling about Edda never being able to dance. I have been very good at keeping these thoughts away this season shoving them into the corner of my heart and enjoying the season and being thankful for all the good luck and fortune we have.

Untitled

The last time I went to see the Nut, I bought a Clara ornament which was beautiful. Tall with a full pink dress, it was one of the largest in our collection. We hung it too low on the tree and now the evil devil grinch dog has destroyed it.

Raining Day & Night at San Jose, CA

These days, it almost rains all the times.  Most buildings here are not rain-proof.  It leaks.  In our office, there have numerous places soaked with rain water.  In front of my apartment, there is a under ground pipe that has leaked for several weeks.  It seems to me that no one is trying to fix it.  All one can see is a big water puddle with warming stands and ribbons around.  I guess, here, no one works outdoor while raining.

Vince is under the weather.

So Vince has what Edda had a few days ago - upset tummy and just feeling crappy. We are still deciding if he is going to go to school today. Sometimes these stomach things can be gone in less than 24 hours.  Here he is pre-sick.

upload

I took the day off yesterday to spend time with my youngest friend, Bert. Bert is very good looking, but he is also gassy, fussy, hungry and sleepy. All things that make his mother slightly exhausted. I remember those days very well, so I showed up and made lunch and held the baby when crying and tried to be helpful. It's exhausting even with 2 grown people with years of experience. But I had a great time and I'm hoping to do it a few more times before the holidays are here.

upload

Baby technology moves forward, so I got to try on the fancy new baby carriers and now babies have apps on the iPad too! I forget the iPad was not yet invented when my kids were little. Bert's favorite app is called the "Baby Shusher!" Which just goes Shhhhhh, Shhhhh, Shhhhh forever. Of course - when the baby was fussy, I was holding him and bouncing him and saying "shhhhhh" and my pal Vickey exclaimed, there is an app for that! So surprised. Anyways, Bert is a beauty.

upload

I didn't get home until 5:30 or so and picked up Vince from a friend's house down the street - they warned me that Vince might be sick, andI totally apologized for bringing a sick kid into their midst. I didn't realize that he was really sick and just parked on the toilet. Poor kid. I asked him why he didn't come home during the day and he said that he knew I wasn't home and the nurse said that he didn't have a fever and could just rough out the day.

Daily life

I've already had a great run this morning - if nothing else gets done today, at least I ran!

We did send Edda to school yesterday, she slept well and no puking and seem to be happy and enthusiastic in the morning. But she was sleepy most of the day and slept a lot at school. SeHyun was debating whether she should take Edda to OT based on Edda's day at school, but they went and it was OK which was good.  I do get sad if Edda has to miss OT for any reason, Deb and Edda have a nice interaction together that is an important part of Edda's week.

I got Vince's student violin repaired yesterday - it is not a very old violin, so with the weather change, the violin warped a little bit, bringing the E string within half a millimeter of the fingerboard. I have to admit that I though Vince had tossed the violin a little too violently (oops, I mean enthusiastically) and broke something. But no, it's totally the violin's fault. I loved the violin shop, totally a mess, unstrung instruments everywhere, the proprietor a funny Chinese man who is kind and goofy at the same time - showing me violins he's making which he's selling for $38,000 which in the violin world is pretty apparently a pretty reasonable price!

upload

Vince is suppose to upgrade to a full size violin next year and the kind gentleman at the repair shop was trying to tell me that Vince is going to practice more on a better sounding violin. I'm a little skeptical about that hypothesis, I don't think owning a Strad will make Vince practice all day - I'm not sure Vince is yet out-performing his student mass-made violin.

4 am

Yesterday at 4 am, Edda and I were already on our 2nd round of clean sheets and pajamas for the night when I heard the sounds of the 3rd round of impending puke. I thought this time I would be clever and guide her in our sleepy stupor to the toilet in the next room and then we wouldn't have to clean anything. After a few minutes of complaining and no puke coming out of Edda, I decided that he had already puked out her guts in the last 2 vomiting sessions and we should just head to bed. Two steps into her bedroom, 2 steps from the easily cleanable, easily wipe-able tile floor of the bathroom, Edda lets loose the last third of her dinner last night onto the white carpeting. What is it about white carpeting that attracts all sorts of crazy ass stains. At least the sheets were still clean. So it has been a long night. But at least we saw Santa this weekend!

Mad about test.

upload

So I prepared for two tests yesterday - the lab test (which is remembering the names of about 100-150 muscles in the body) and the lecture test which is the physiology of how muscles contract and how neurons send signals throughout the body. A tremendous amount of information for my sieve-like brain. I walked into class a little early and asked a few of my classmates - so wasn't that like the most information you had to learn ever at one time? Then a super on-top-of-it-all classmate mentioned that the prof put a little note on the class web page that mentioned that there would be no lecture test! Less than 24 hours before the test was to be given! Argh! Kill me slowly with a dull knife.

upload

Whatever. It is all fine. This morning, I've already given a pretty good haircut to Edda - I'm pleased with her slow progression from Romulan to Dora.

Kouign-amann, pancake practice, bacon.

Ohhhh, I love these Kouign-amann.  It's like a croissant covered in a crunchy sugar coating. I'm eating poorly these days, snackin...
