Slumber party on Wed night! Crazy.

DSC_0017

Vince has wanted to host a slumber party for a while - so since there was no school today because of a professional day for teachers, we hosted a party of FIVE. There was a lot of DS-ing, a lot of Bayblade-ing and a lot of wrestling. Everyone got along, so no arguments, no slapping. Apparently the use of PJs is already out of style in the third grade, sleeping in one's underwear is the way to go. The only misstep was that at 3:30 am when Jeremy was answering Edda's nightly seizure call, he found three boys still bathed in the glow of tiny computer screens. Sigh. We should have taken all the electronics away at lights out. Must remember that tip for next time.

Bed heads all around after 3.5 hours of sleep. They are the easiest crowd to feed - pizza (cheese), Kraft Mac and Cheese (don't try to slip in Annie's mac and cheese) and some frozen waffles in the morning.

Of course, 2 hours after everyone left, Vince spiked a fever and is asleep. Exhaustion.

Back from Brazil.

Jeremy just got back from a 10-day business trip to Brazil. It was focused on agriculture policy/practices in Brazil, but it also seemed like a lot of fun:

Like drinking Caipirinhas.

Birthday party!

In honor of the actual day of Edda's birthday, we had a small family celebration. Edda's birthday is always bittersweet and a little difficult - the ritual of balloons, cake and gifts is really just something I do for me because I don't think Edda knows this is a day different from all the other days.

DSC_0021

We presented Edda with the cake and she promptly slap-smacked the candles (thank goodness they weren't lit yet).

DSC_0022

We had some helium from the balloons and all of us inhaled and sang Edda "Happy Birthday" in chipmunk voices which amused all of us :)!

Happy Birthday, Edda - from Grand Mom, Rena & Grand Pa, Noel.

Grand Mom & Grand Pa can't wait for your family birthday party on Saturday night at our place when your Daddy comes back from Brazil earlier in that morning.

Again, Edda - Happy Birthday to You! Much Love!

Mom's okra.

My parents came by last night with Chinese take-out. Except for the okra, which my mom cooked herself.

Last Sunday, we celebrated S's 7th birthday. S was born a week before Edda, so she is my benchmark or milestone marker for Edda to keep Edda (and me) up to speed in the world of 7 year old girls. S got her ears pierced in honor of turning 7, so it occurs to me that maybe Edda would want her own ears pierced. Hmmm. Something to consider.

Relax and rejuvenvate weekend.

It is such a beautiful weekend, I am a little embarrassed to admit that we are just staying in the house and relaxing all weekend. No play dates, no extra activities, no nothing. Vince is doing a Rugrats marathon, I'm catching up on bills/paperwork/taxes and Grey's Anatomy. Edda is still in her pajamas. We are eating on the couch and licking the artificial butter off of the packaging of microwave popcorn. It's awesome.

Worried.

Because my parents have spent a career designing piping systems for nuclear power plants and because Jeremy works in energy policy and because I have worked as an actual engineer that has stood in front of a machine that refuses to work even though you've tried everything you can think of (including kicking it), it is with heightened anxiety that I hear that the situation at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station is getting worse. I know that lots of people have lost their lives and lots of people have no food or water and that it's freezing, but somehow I dwell on those handful of nuclear engineers and technicians who are without doubt operating on sheer panic to try and control the rapidly out-of-control situation.

On a lighter note, here's Edda trotting. I tried to remind Jeremy to find out the name of the horse, but of course, he forgot.

Tree shopping.

DSC_0048

We went to our local nursery this afternoon to see if we could find a small dogwood tree to plant in our front lawn. We are a little too early to find very many trees in stock, but we did get to see some beautiful plants!

Orchids

DSC_0045

I am starting an Orchid collection. Either I get them as gifts or I find them neglected somewhere and ask if I can take home. I am so pleased to find out that these beautiful flowers don't need very much light, our house is shaded so I thought I could never have flowers in the house. But now I have these!

Hooray for school funding!

Vince is taking the first part out of four sections of the MSA this morning. The MSA are some sort of no-child-left-behind testing that is done in almost year Vince has been in school. They have spent a tremendous amount of time preparing for this exam, every piece of homework sent home this year (especially the reading homework) has been geared to improving performance on this exam. It's a little tiring how much this exam is emphasized - but I'm happy that Vince gets to do a lot of other non-test prep stuff at his school. He's learning to play the recorder in music class as well as making awesome masks in art class. His mask was on display at the local library and we went to admire his masterpiece this weekend.

Edda feverish again.

Edda spiked a fever again on Friday night. So she's sick again. Poo poo. Ruby is very concerned.

IMG_0087

I was hoping that the fever would dissipate during the day yesterday (sometimes Edda gets a 24 hour bug that comes and goes pretty quickly) so we took her all around town doing various errands...

Like shopping for low sodium chicken broth from Target (Edda is feeling crappy).

and admiring their large display of cheese balls.

And we also stopped by our local cookie stand which was raising funds for IRSF!

Vince's first birthday party.

Because both of the kids have birthdays in March, I often feel like the whole month is a big, endless, sugary celebration. Last night we started with a Lee family birthday party for Vince. My mom cooked (love me some wide lens action).

Bad mood.

I am in a bad mood. Nothing is bad. I'm just in a bad mood.

I have transferred my service from one dumb phone to another dumb phone. I'm wondering how long I can hold out from getting a smart phone.

IMG_0001

Maxi is still a pain in my ass. She licked the cream cheese frosting off of this cake while it was sitting in the exact center of the dining room table. I guess she prefers frosting over the actual cake. Jeremy trimmed off the dog slobbered section and saved the rest in a tupperware container. Slightly pink red velvet cake anyone? We have ice cream to go with it. :)
